Every year Presidents’ Day falls on the third Monday in February.
The holiday began in 1800 as an unofficial celebration of the late George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22. In 1885 the holiday became an official U.S. holiday, joining four other national holidays: Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, altering the holiday to occur on every third Monday in February.
