The Kansas City Chiefs are the 2023 Super Bowl champions, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 Sunday night.
Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts set a Super Bowl record with the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. But his three touchdowns and his two-point conversion were not enough to propel the Eagles past the Chiefs.
The Eagles held the lead three times throughout the first half, with the Chiefs coming back to tie it up each time. There must have been something inspiring about Rihanna’s performance in the half-time show because the Chiefs dominated the second half.
With a one-point lead and ten minutes left in the game, Chiefs Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney caught an Eagles punt and ran it 65 yards — the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. The Eagles’ defense stopped him just before the end zone, but the Chiefs would score on the next play, putting them up 35-27.
The Eagles would score again and add a two-point conversion to tie it up, but the Chiefs were not done there.
With just under two minutes left, Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a pass intended for Wide Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster just inside the end zone, but the pass was incomplete. There was, however, a flag on the play, causing a five-yard penalty.
The Chiefs ran out as much of the clock as possible, then kicked a field goal to win the game.
Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP for the second time in his career after leading his team to the championship despite a high-ankle sprain — an injury that typically limits one’s ability to walk, never mind play a sport at the highest level.
