John Heckel of Idaho Fish and Game spoke to students of the Fisheries Society on Monday.
Heckel talked about a program Idaho Fish and Game has implemented to track migrating Yellowstone cutthroat trout and smallmouth bass in Rire Reservoir.
According to Heckel, Idaho Fish and Game has been inserting tags into both trout and bass to see what their migration patterns are between Rire Reservoir and its nearby tributaries.
After Heckel’s presentation, students asked questions and provided insights on what they learned during the presentation.
Josh Clark, a sophomore studying fisheries, range and wildlife management attends society meetings each week and enjoys learning about future opportunities that could await him in his field of study.
“I like hearing about post-undergrad opportunities and making connections,” Clark said.
Logan Thompson, a junior studying fisheries, range and wildlife management, also enjoys attending the weekly Monday meetings.
“I like interacting with other students within the same major,” Thompson said.
Both Thompson and Clark have summer internships with Idaho Fish and Game where they will work on Henry’s Fork and South Fork on the Snake River.
For those looking to attend the Fisheries Society, meetings are held in Benson 222 at 4 p.m. every Monday. Guest speakers are present at most meetings.
