Junior forward Lauren Gustin accomplished the second 20-point game of her career which led the Cougars to a 63-49 home win over the San Diego Toreros on Jan. 7. Gustin tied the BYU Marriott Center rebounds record with 21 points and 24 rebounds.

In the first quarter, Nani Falatea scored 9 points, all three-pointers. Bringing the game to 18-7. By the end of the first quarter, the Cougars led the game. The Toreros tried to block Nani’s 3-pointers with a double-team but were unsuccessful.

In the second quarter, the Cougars’ strong offensive continued. Gustin had 14 rebounds in the first half. For roughly two minutes, the Cougars had a 10-point advantage. The Cougars committed 10 turnovers in the second half alone, and the Toreros scored 7 points as a result.

At halftime, BYU had 22 rebounds while the Toreros had 10.

After the third quarter, Gustin had 17 points and 20 rebounds. This quarter had the biggest point differential, 14 points. By the third quarter’s end, BYU was ahead 47-35

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars maintained their 14-point advantage. Despite having a total of 19 turnovers, the Cougars performed admirably on attack and defense during the quarter.

The Cougars will take a 5-day break before facing the Loyola Marymount Lions at LMU Gersten Pavilion, Los Angels, California. Viewers can watch the game on WCC Network at 7 p.m. PST on January 12.
